Chapter Thirteen

We gathered up anything we could find in Parker’s apartment that might be helpful, and put it back to rights. Having the super enter and find the signs of a struggle would get the police involved, and they’d be more a hindrance than a help. With a clean apartment, the super was more likely to think Parker had left, running from his life, maybe, and he probably wouldn’t call the cops.

There was no sign of the CTOV team as we pulled into the driveway around midnight. Hudson opened the garage with the remote and guided the car inside. The events of the day were starting to catch up with me, but we still had a long night of chasing clues through Parker’s laptop and paperwork. I had to know what he had been doing, and how the video makers had found out my name.

We’d stepped outside when Priya came jogging down the stairs from the second-floor apartment she’d returned to after her dad had found out the truth. I hadn’t seen her much in the few days that had passed since the confrontation at Alleys, so I wasn’t sure what she was up to. She’d trimmed her undercut recently, so one side of her head was bare, bronze skin, but that was the only sign she was taking care of herself. There were dark circles under her eyes, and she wore a dingy T-shirt and shapeless sweatpants.

“Oy, Uncle Hud. Did you see my dad?”

The weight of that personal challenge seemed to land on Hudson’s shoulders. “No, Priya.”

“Shit,” she muttered.

“Have you tried calling him?”

“He picked up once, realized who it was, and blocked my number.” She chewed on her lower lip. “I don’t know what to do. I want to know that he’s okay.”

“He’s not.” I pressed my lips together immediately after the words burst out of me, but it was too late.

“What do you mean?”

Shit, I was in it now. Might as well continue. “You let him think you were dead for almost six years. And now he knows it wasn’t real. But the emotions he went through were, and still are. So yeah, he’s not okay. He probably won’t be for a long time.”

Priya shuffled her bare feet on the wooden step, looking down as she propped one big toe over the other.

“I went to his hotel room a couple of days ago,” Hudson admitted. “He wouldn’t let me in. Yelled at me to fuck off through the door.”

Proof of life at least, but I suspected Hudson didn’t see it like that.

“I can pay him a visit,” Colin offered.

“No.” I sighed. “Hudson, Priya, you’re family. I love you both. But I’m done putting up with your shit.”

Colin moved closer to me, as if to hold me back. “Hey, Ev...”

“No,” I said again, and stepped forward so I was in front of Priya. “Priya, I get why you did what you did. You didn’t want to hurt your father. But you did hurt him, and deeply, and you asked Hudson to lie about.
